The modern Western diet is widely accepted as a key contributor to the development of dental caries and many noncommunicable chronic disorders (NCDs) affecting modern society. In this QRG, the author describes the characteristics of the Western diet and its impact on both systemic and oral health. The characteristics of a healthy diet and the relevance of the growing market for dietary supplements will also be discussed. Finally, the role of the oral healthcare provider in identifying and educating patients on proper nutrition will be presented.
